Thorn - helping protect children from -- and with -- technology

You may have heard that Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are involved in anti-trafficking efforts.  They're lending their celebrity status (and serve as board members) of an organization called Thorn.

Thorn's website says, "We join forces with the sharpest minds from tech, non-profit, government and law enforcement. We work to stop the spread of child sexual abuse material and stand up to child traffickers. We’re also uncovering new kinds of abuse, and fighting those too."

Their work is guided by three principles:

  • Accelerate victim identification

  • Deter abusers

  • Disrupt platforms

Thorn's first product called Spotlight, "...was designed based on insights from our first survivor survey. It accelerates victim identification and helps law enforcement make the best use of the critical time they have to find child sex trafficking victims."  Since 2016, Spotlight has "helped identify an average of 8 kids per day, reduce critical search times by 65%, and find a total of 5,791 kids."

Additional products -- like Project Vic and BEFREE text shortcode -- have been developed and are in use.  (Click here to learn more.)

And Thorn shares what they've learned.  They say, "It’s all about preventing further abuse. We offer clear insights and best practices for companies, platforms, and individuals."

Yay for THORN!

I'm encouraged by the number of people and organizations involved in efforts to fight and prevent trafficking.  Join in one or more of the events  listed below as we do our part right here in northwest Washington!
