IJM Prayer Request

"This is what the Lord says: 'Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed.' " — Isaiah 56:1 Africa Thank God for the continued cooperation between IJM lawyers and the prosecutor in the trial for the murders of Willie, Joseph, and Josephat, our colleague and friends in Kenya. Last week, the defense counsels challenged the order in which the prosecution and defense have been examining witnesses. Currently the lawyer representing the victims (and their families) has been the last to ask questions, as was agreed in pre-trial. The trial is adjourned until April 24, 2017, when both parties will appear to make arguments for the order of witness examination. This means that eight days of hearings which were scheduled over the next two weeks will have to be rescheduled. Pray that the trial will be rescheduled to consecutive dates in May and June, and that there are no further delays to hearings. Latin America Join us in praising God for strong collaboration with Dominican officials that led to the arrest of multiple foreigners accused of exploiting teenage girls. Police arrested two U.S. citizens and an Italian man, who allegedly lured young girls and sexually abused them. At least five victims are now safe, and IJM’s team will be working with police to pursue leads to locate more potential victims. South Asia Please pray for an upcoming rescue operation being planned by IJM, one of our partner organizations and the local government. Our partner has found several families who were trafficked across state borders to be forced into bondage hundreds of miles from home. Details are still coming together. Please pray for good collaboration with the authorities and for freedom for these families in need. Southeast Asia Please pray for two young sisters set free from cybersex trafficking in the Philippines. Their uncle was apparently setting up the abusive shows from his home and broadcasting the sexual exploitation online. Praise God that IJM’s team in Cebu was able to help authorities intervene. Pray that the peace of Christ and comfort of our good Father would help the girls heal. Pray for the IJM social workers to have wisdom as they help government social services make a plan for the girls’ short-term and long-term care. IJM HQ & Global Partners IJM has partner offices in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK. "He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth."

— Daniel 6:27

Africa

  • Praise God for a partnership formed between IJM and the Anglican Church of Uganda. The church’s vision of opening legal chambers will grow its role in serving widows and orphans in the community by providing legal services to victims of property grabbing. Legal clinics dedicated to this purpose are the first of its kind in the country. It is encouraging to see the church take a lead in caring for the vulnerable, and we pray that this will sustain efforts to ensure that women are protected.

Latin America

  • Praise God for the arrest of a Bolivian man who had sexually abused his daughter Yessica,* for years. The assaults finally stopped when 14-year-old Yessica was able to escape his control at a hospital, but he then went into hiding. Police found and arrested him on Tuesday, and now the IJM team can begin seeking justice and providing the family with closure. Please pray for the upcoming trial, and praise God for Yessica’s confidence. As she says, “My God always seeks justice, even when a person has caused so much harm.”

South Asia

  • Please pray for 320 survivors of slavery who were just inducted into their local Released Bonded Laborer Associations (RBLAs). These networks are made up of local leaders who were once in bondage and now can advocate for the rights of their community. IJM has even worked with RBLAs to free others from the slavery they once endured. Pray these 320 women and men will feel empowered by their leadership positions and will find success in working with the government at a grassroots level to end slavery.

Southeast Asia

  • Praise God that 8 children were rescued from cybersex trafficking in the Philippines. Two suspects were arrested during the operation, and the boys and girls are now safe at shelters. Sadly, the suspects were related to the victims. Pray for the children to experience God’s peace and powerful presence as they begin to process the abuse and betrayal they have endured. Pray for the suspects to also encounter God’s mercy as they face the crimes they have committed.

IJM HQ & Global Partners

  • Please pray for us as we continue to seek a Collaboration Systems Analyst to join us. The successful candidate will provide leadership, management and support for IJM’s various collaboration systems.  As part of the Application Management group, this role will help provide strategy and direction for the use of collaboration systems in the organization.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

— Galatians 6:9

Africa

  • Pray for the children rescued from slavery in the fishing industry in Ghana as our aftercare team teaches them about their rights to freedom. It became clear while working with rescued children, that many had no concept of what it meant to have rights under Ghanaian law, or that the law should protect them from abuse. Our aftercare team partnered with a Ghanaian artist to create a beautifully illustrated curriculum called “I Am Worthy,” that talks about rights in a way that children can understand. Our prayer is that this curriculum will help survivors understand their own stories and believe in their inherent dignity and worth.

Latin America

  • Praise God that three girls were set free from sex trafficking last week in the Dominican Republic. Eleven-year-old Alania* was rescued along with two sisters, and they are now safe at an aftercare shelter. Karla,* one of the sisters, turned 13 the day after she was rescued. The IJM team was there to celebrate her with a cake and candles. Pray that these girls will encounter the powerful love of God as they begin to process the trauma of having been sold for sexual exploitation. Pray that the man who was arrested will be tried and brought to justice for his crimes.

South Asia

  • Thank you for praying for more criminal accountability in South Asia—and praise God with us for the conviction of another slave owner! This man had trafficked and enslaved 12 women and men for years at a brutal brick kiln. After a 2.5-year trial (one of our shortest ever), he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Please pray that more criminals would face justice this year, so we can break the cycle of slavery and show that justice for the poor is truly possible!

Southeast Asia

  • Pray for IJM’s team in the Philippines as they build partnerships with government agencies and aftercare organizations that could provide shelter and other services to cybersex trafficking survivors. Right now there are very few specialized aftercare services for boys and girls who suffer this unique trauma. Ask God to move mightily and build up a powerful network of providers and people who can offer short-term to long-term community-based care for these children as they grow up.

IJM HQ & Global Partners

IJM has partner offices in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

  • Please pray for a Director of Infrastructure Services to join our team. The ideal candidate’s main responsibility is to enable effective use of technology through a secure, scalable and reliable global infrastructure. This person will lead a team responsible for building, maintaining and supporting IJM technology infrastructure, including on-premise and cloud platforms.

"Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord your God is giving you."

— Deuteronomy 16:20

Africa

  • This week the trial for the murder of our colleague and friends, Willie, Joseph, and Josephat, continued in Kenya. Last year in the wake of the murders we witnessed an incredible outpouring of support from lawyers, activists, and civil-society groups demanding accountability for police abuse of power. Pray that this movement continues and that we are able to continue working closely with police to provide training for ending this abuse of power.

Latin America

  • Praise God for Guatemala’s Attorney General Thelma Aldana, who spoke at our Global Prayer Gathering last weekend in Washington, DC. She shared how God has helped her stand up for women and children’s rights and seek justice in Guatemala. She has indeed been a champion for vulnerable people who need the protection of the law the most. Pray that God would continue to bless her work, keep her family safe, and sustain her by his strength.

South Asia

  • Please pray for one of our teams re-strategizing on a rescue operation that was not successful earlier this week. Local police investigated a sex trafficking case and requested IJM’s assistance in rescuing two minor girls from a brothel. Unfortunately, when we arrived the girls had already run away. Pray that these girls would be safe as our team works hard to find them, rescue them, and escort them to a loving aftercare home. Pray that these girls would trust the IJM social workers, despite the fear and deception instilled in their hearts while they were in bondage.

Southeast Asia

  • Thank you for praying last week with our team in Thailand for a 15-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted by an older man in her village. IJM social workers worked with her to help prepare for her year-end exams, and she is now at an aftercare shelter. Praise God that she is safe, and please pray for wisdom for the IJM lawyer who will be gathering evidence to help build a strong case. Pray for her family as they will remain at their home. Ask God to fortify them with peace and protection as they seek justice.

IJM HQ & Global Partners

IJM has partner offices in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

  • Praise God for the 1,700 people who came to pray with us last weekend at our Global Prayer Gathering. Praise God for everyone who came together to worship and pray for our work around the world. Please pray for our staff who are traveling back home, and for all participants as they discern what to do with the information they learned.
  • Please pray for us as we continue to search for a Field Office Director in Bolivia to join our team. We are seeking a proven leader to direct IJM’s Field Office in Bolivia to combat sexual violence against children. This position is based in La Paz, Bolivia, and reports to the Vice President of Regional Operations, Latin America.

March 4, 2017

“Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! People of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you.”

— Isaiah 30:18-19

Africa

  • Please pray for the families in several cases of property grabbing in Uganda who have had hearings canceled this week. Showing up and testifying in these cases is an act of bravery for the widows who have often experienced threats of violence from members of their own communities. Trial delays can be very discouraging, but despite all the challenges, we are amazed by the strength and faith these women display as they choose to stand up and demand justice for their families. Pray for their continued strength and for the cases to move forward without further delay.

Latin America

  • Please pray for our legal and aftercare teams in Bolivia as they encourage survivors of sexual violence to stay motivated in court. Trials can take several years in Bolivia, and many survivors struggle with facing past trauma over and over in that time. Others face intense family pressure to drop their cases and move on with life. Pray for our team as we seek to help these clients make the decision that’s best for them and their ongoing safety—hopefully a decision for justice.

South Asia

  • Praise God for a conviction this week in a bonded labor slavery case eight years in the making! IJM had helped to rescue six people from violent bondage at a rice mill in 2008, but the legal case against the slave owner dragged for years in the overburdened courts. IJM attorneys attended more than 80 hearings in that time, and we’ve prayed over and over for this judgment to come. Praise God for his answer to our persistence as we boldly celebrate justice served for these survivors!

Southeast Asia

  • Pray for an urgent case in Chiang Mai, Thailand: We are helping to investigate a sexual assault case against a 15-year-old girl. Earlier this week, we learned that village elders were threatening her family and looking for the IJM lawyer, angry that we were helping her family seek justice in a court. Often in rural areas, sexual violence cases are simply settled within the village—which does not hold the criminal accountable or deter others from committing the same abuse. Praise God that the girl is now in a safe place. Pray for wisdom and God’s protection as we continue to pursue justice in this case.

IJM HQ & Global Partners

  • Please continue praying for an Art Director/Designer to join our team at HQ. The Art Director will regularly conceptualize creative solutions that effectively communicate the IJM brand strategy and story in the form of marketing campaigns, interactive design, print collateral, films, reports and more. This position is based at IJM Headquarters in the Washington, DC area and reports to the Director of Creative Services.

Justice in Bolivia and a cybersex trafficking operation in the Philippines

January 28, 2017

For the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever."

— Psalm 9:18

Africa

  • Pray for a woman who was pushed off her land last weekend in Uganda. We are representing her in court, but even so her landlord has apparently sold the land right out from under her. Please pray for protection and peace as she waits, and pray that justice would come swiftly so she is able to return home with her family.

Latin America

  • Praise God for a 12-year-old girl who received justice in her case this week in Bolivia. The neighbor who assaulted her was convicted and sentenced to thirty years in prison—this is the longest sentence we have ever seen in all of our cases in Bolivia. Pray for continued healing and restoration for this young girl, and pray that word of this strong sentence would deter others from abusing children.

South Asia

  • Please pray for our team’s relationships with new government officials in one key state where we work. The state recently had several key leadership changes, and they also reassigned a new ministry to address the issue of bonded labor slavery. Shuffles like these can often delay our momentum in fighting this crime. Pray our team can build quick, positive relationships with all of their new contacts, so that we can work together to rescue families, hold criminals accountable, and create lasting change that keeps the poor safe.

Southeast Asia

  • Praise God for a 15-year-old girl rescued from cybersex trafficking in the Philippines. This rescue operation is connected to another case we worked on last October, and we are grateful to God that he led us back to the home where this girl was being sexually exploited in footage broadcast online. Please pray for healing in her body, mind and spirit.

IJM HQ & Global Partners

"Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering."

— Hebrews 13:3

Africa

  • Please pray for IJM’s team in Kenya as they prepare for the next phase of the trial for five men accused of murdering IJM investigator Willie Kimani, client Josephat Mwenda, and driver Joseph Muiruri. Hearings in the high-profile case will resume in mid-February. Pray for safety, stamina and energy as the team prepares for the trial, and for staff who will be traveling to Kenya from other regions to provide extra support. Pray that ultimately all who were involved in the deaths would be brought to justice.

Latin America

  • Please pray for an ongoing training program IJM is leading in Guatemala to equip senior police officials to more effectively fight crimes of child sexual violence. Last week, IJM trained more than 50 officials in the third of four trainings that could ultimately impact how all Guatemalan police protect children from abuse. Please pray that the lessons stick, and that they would be the start of a major culture change throughout the Guatemalan police force that would end the country’s plague of sexual violence against children.

South Asia

  • Please pray for one of our South Asia teams as they await police go-ahead on an urgent rescue operation to free 20+ men from slavery. These young men were trafficked thousands of miles from their homes and forced to work in a factory, where they face daily violence, intimidation and desperation. Pray that our team can coordinate quickly with anti-trafficking police to rescue these men and bring them to safety, putting an end to their violent abuse.

Southeast Asia

  • Please pray for IJM’s team in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as we have a unique opportunity to help authorities in a district review hundreds of citizenship applications this week. This district has thousands of applications that have languished, and the governor invited IJM to help review and process the extensive paperwork. Pray that this review opens the flood gates so that the hundreds of hill tribe people who are legally entitled to become Thai citizens would be able to obtain and benefit from that right.

IJM January 7, 2017

“The Lord’s justice will dwell in the desert, his righteousness live in the fertile field.”

— Isaiah 32:16

Africa

  • Please continue praying for safety for our staff and the impoverished widows we serve in northern Uganda. Our project area is very rural and often unprotected by police, and violent crime is rampant. Recently, our staff have heard many gunshots in the areas where we work. Ask for God’s protection over our staff as they travel to court and to the field, and that the widows we serve would also be safe as they wait to have their homes and land restored to them.

Latin America

  • Praise God for a strong conviction in the case of an IJM client in Guatemala named Dámaris*. Beginning when she was 13 years old, Dámaris was repeatedly raped by her uncle, a man who has been accused of sexually abusing multiple women. Late last month, he was convicted and sentenced to 33 years in prison. Praise God for the efforts of the entire Guatemala team on behalf of this client, and please pray for her as she continues to work toward complete restoration and healing from the abuse.

South Asia

  • Praise God for eight landmark convictions in South Asia that send a powerful message to human traffickers. On Christmas Eve, eight men were found guilty for trafficking and torturing two innocent men—resulting in the men losing their right hands. It was one of the most brutally violent cases IJM had ever seen. But now those traffickers are beginning life sentences for their crimes. Praise God for this powerful end to the trial, and read more about the case on our website.

Southeast Asia

  • Keep praying for a critical case in the Philippines: As we shared a few weeks ago, three traffickers were convicted in one of our earliest and biggest cases of sex trafficking in Cebu. Praise God that one of the criminals was found and arrested last week, and please pray that authorities will find the other two who remain at-large. The case dates back to 2008, when IJM helped rescue 27 young women, including 14 minors, from a brothel where they had been trafficked. Pray that all three individuals convicted for their crimes would encounter the Lord’s mercy as they serve out fair sentences.

IJM HQ & Global Partners

IJM has partner offices in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

  • Last year the UK government pledged to end slavery and launched the Modern Slavery Innovation Fund, to which IJM has applied for funding. Please pray for favor over this application as we wait to hear back.
  • Please pray for us as we seek a Director of Infrastructure Services. The primary responsibility of this position is to enable effective use of technology through a secure, scalable and reliable global infrastructure.  This person will lead a team responsible for building, maintaining and supporting IJM’s technology infrastructure, including on premise and cloud platforms.
