IJM Prayer Requests

Africa

  • Pray for a new coalition of organizations fighting against child slavery in Ghana. This coalition is an opportunity to build stronger cooperation and engagement with partners, to improve responses to trafficking and strengthen reintegration efforts. At the first meeting in September, IJM led a training on trafficking prosecutions. Next week will be the second meeting for the coalition, and we would love for this to be a time of encouragement for all of the different organizations involved in ending slavery.

Latin America

  • Please lift up our team in the Dominican Republic to the Lord, especially our legal team and their upcoming trials. Some of the lawyers have faced a lot of obstacles the past month with some judges. Pray for strength, energy and favor in the judge’s eyes. Pray for the judges of this city — for compassion, wisdom and understanding.

South Asia

  • Praise God for another joyful graduation ceremony where 200 former slaves celebrated their journey to restoration. Two years ago, these families were being forced to work in brick kilns, rice mills, rock quarries and other tough work environments. Children couldn’t go to school, and families lacked even the most basic medical care. Today, however, they’ve been empowered with skills and resources to truly thrive. It’s an amazing transformation! Praise God for our staff who’ve walked faithfully alongside these families for two years, and pray for their ongoing success as they live in freedom.

Southeast Asia

  • Praise God that two men suspected of running a cybersex trafficking ring were arrested last week in Manila. The IJM team helped Philippine National Police rescue a 17-year-old girl and arrest the men in an operation that originated from an FBI referral. Authorities believe the Filipino suspects were exploiting girls, primarily aged 10- to 15-years-old, over the past five years. Pray that all of the children who have been exploited would be found.

  • Join us in praising God for the largest Advocacy Summit in IJM history earlier this week! Over 300 people representing thirty states met with elected officials, asking them to use their power to fuel the fight against modern day slavery. Please pray that God would continue to work in the hearts of these members of Congress, and that advocates would have meaningful follow-up opportunities with their officials over the coming weeks.
  • Please lift up our search for a Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Bay Area. This person has the opportunity to meaningfully engage donors in our work, showing how their joyful financial partnership can bring freedom and rescue to thousands. For this role, IJM is seeking a skilled networker with a fearless approach to building relationships with high net worth individuals and the ability to convert those relationships to financial gifts. The successful candidate will raise $1,000,000 in their first year in the role and 20% more each subsequent year.

Africa

  • Pray for the trial for the murder of Willie, Joseph and Josephat, our colleagues and client in Kenya. This week the trial started up again after more than two months. Please pray for the families of Willie, Joseph and Josephat, and our Kenya team, as they hear the difficult accounts of their loved ones. Pray for their strength and healing, and for justice to be done.

Latin America

  • Praise God for a new conviction in Guatemala. Last week, our team secured a conviction in a case of sexual violence that had been open since 2013. The perpetrator was a transit police officer and had sexually assaulted a young girl. Pray for the survivor as she continues to receive therapy to overcome the trauma. Pray that God will surround her with a supportive community that reminds her of her value in Christ and can walk with her in her personal journey of healing.

South Asia

  • Please pray for our teams across South Asia as they take on exciting opportunities to train law enforcement officers on combating slavery and human trafficking. We are excited to leverage our experience with officials this way, but also need God’s grace over every logistical detail, every conversation and every training we conduct. Pray these leaders will have open minds and a renewed passion for protecting the poor, and pray for energy and wisdom for the IJM team taking these big initiatives to impact the justice system.

Southeast Asia

  • Praise God for the officials, pastors and community leaders who attended a workshop in Cambodia this week. This was the fifth collaborative workshop hosted by the IJM team this year, and the purpose was to equip leaders with practical tools they can use to protect people from human trafficking. Exercises during the workshop allowed local government officials and pastors to interact, some for the first time. Pastors are often in the best position to spot vulnerable people; pray that these leaders would be able to make good referrals to officials in their area, and pray that they would help protect people in their community.

  • Please pray for our supporters and staff as we prepare for the 2017 Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C., on October 23-24. Pray that the final details of scheduling meetings with elected officials would come together smoothly, and for safety as our supporters travel to D.C. from around the country. Join us in asking God to move our elected leaders to take action against slavery as they see their constituents speaking on behalf of the oppressed.
  • Please pray for our search for a Director of Internal CommunicationsWe are looking for a thoughtful and thorough leader for our Internal Communications team. This is a new team, critical to equipping our growing organization to scale and connecting our colleagues around the world. Working closely with employees, key stakeholders and leadership, this person will establish organizational communication channels, tools and messaging strategies.

IJM Prayer Requests

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ ”

— Revelation 21:3-4

Africa

  • This week IJM President Sean Litton and the Honorable Chief Justice of Uganda Bart Katureebe signed an MOU that will lay the path forward for IJM’s work to end violence against women and children in Uganda. Praise God with us for this incredible opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the Ugandan government and celebrate the changes we have witnessed in the public justice system over the years that we have been partnering with them to protect widows from land theft.
  • In another exciting development, IJM has been chosen by the Uganda Ministry of Gender to consult on a World Bank project to protect women and children from violence in Western Uganda. Thank God for Uganda’s leaders taking a strong stand against violent attitudes towards women and children, and pray for this partnership to grow and lead to a transformation of the public justice system so that all Ugandans can know they are safe and protected by the law.

Latin America

  • Praise God for a great opportunity to train police officers to fight sexual violence against children in Bolivia. On October 10 and 11, our field office team led a training on investigations of child sexual violence for 16 police officers, 15 of whom were brand new to the division! Pray that these new police officials will put into practice what they have learned and that they will remain open to respond to God’s call to seek justice as they perform in their new roles.

South Asia

  • Please pray for a survivor of sex trafficking named Rachita* as she continues on her healing journey. Incredibly sweet and selfless, Rachita prays constantly for those around her rather than for herself — but admits she still carries a lot of sorrow from the violence she experienced in a brothel. She’s working through this trauma bravely, and we ask for God’s encouragement in her recovery. Please pray he will continue the powerful work happening in her life, and ask for blessings over Rachita as she works toward full restoration in her heart.

Southeast Asia

  • Praise God for another conviction in a case of cybersex trafficking in the Philippines. Three people pled guilty and apologized for exploiting their children, aged 9 to 13 years old. Praise God that justice was handed down through a plea bargain, meaning the children will not have to go through a lengthy trial or be asked to testify against their own relatives. Pray for miracles of restoration in the hearts and minds of the children, who are now living in a shelter, and for the perpetrators as they serve out prison sentences.

“To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” Proverbs 21:3

Africa

  • Praise God for the arrest of several exceptionally violent men who threw a widow and her son out of their home when the widow’s husband died. These men even went so far as assaulting the police when they came to investigate the accusations of land theft on behalf of the widow. Pray that the court case against them will proceed and send a message that Uganda’s legal system will not allow widows to be abused with impunity. Pray also for the widow who was thrown off her land and her son. Just last week IJM helped her to open a small secondhand clothing store so that she will have a source of income. Pray for her encouragement and safety.

Latin America

  • The CNN Freedom Project recently featured our work fighting sex trafficking in the Dominican RepublicPraise God for these inspiring stories and pray for all the people who will see these videos, that their eyes would be opened to the reality of sex trafficking and that they would look for ways to join us in the fight to end sex trafficking in the Dominican Republic.

South Asia

  • Praise God for a major week of rescues late last month — IJM helped officials free 88 people in 8 operations in 8 days! In four cases, the teams freed girls and young women from sex trafficking in brothels and secret trafficking networks. In the other four, IJM helped rescue families from a rock quarry, a sugarcane farm, a lumber yard and a sheep-grazing unit. Thank God for the proactive officials who made this all possible, and pray for all of these 88 survivors as they receive trauma care and begin rebuilding their lives in freedom. Read more about these rescues!

Southeast Asia

  • Two weeks ago we asked you to keep praying for a cybersex trafficking case involving 12 children as young as six years old in the Philippines. Three of the five suspects had been convicted, but two more were refusing to accept plea bargains. This week we learned that both of these suspects admitted guilt, and we will not have to go through a lengthy trial. Praise God that justice has been done for the young survivors in this case, and they won’t have to testify in a trial. Pray that God will reveal his love to all five criminals as they serve out prison sentences.

Please also pray for everyone who attended the concerts, asking God to continue working in their hearts and in their cities to raise up a movement to seek justice for the poor and the oppressed.
