IJM Prayer Request

“Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

— Proverbs 14:31

Africa

  • Last week we asked for your prayers for the IJM Gulu team as they were reviewing potential cases for the new domestic violence project. Praise God that this week the team was able to identify the first two cases that we will be pursuing. Pray for the two women we are representing, for healing from the abuse they have suffered, and for immense strength as they stand up and ask for their partners to be prosecuted.

Latin America

  • Please pray for a legislative initiative that IJM Guatemala has been working on that would help to shorten the processing time of child sexual assault cases throughout Guatemala. The team had strong support from a number of members of the Guatemalan Congress, but due to some scheduling challenges, the momentum for a vote on the legislation has slowed. Pray that God would give the IJM team wisdom and energy to persevere in advocating for this legislation and that leaders in the Guatemalan government would move it forward to a vote.

  • Praise God for a surprise conviction in one of our sex trafficking cases from 2012! In this case, IJM and local police had helped rescue two teen girls from exploitation at a dangerous brothel, where they were physically beaten and forced to use drugs. The brothel keeper was arrested for their abuse and for masterminding a cross-border trafficking ring. We were not sure the courts would find this woman guilty due to some complications in the case, but we were overjoyed when the ruling came down on Tuesday on behalf of justice! Praise God for this breakthrough, and pray the news of the conviction will be encouraging for the brave girls who survived this ordeal.

Southeast Asia

  • Pray for the physical and spiritual health of the IJM staff in the Philippines as they fight to end cybersex trafficking. Cybersex trafficking of children is one of the most difficult issues of violence in the world – even seasoned law enforcement have a very hard time withstanding for long. We have an intense staff and spiritual care program for the Philippines, but please pray for God’s supernatural protection over the hearts and minds of our staff.

  • Please lift up the local prayer gatherings happening in communities across the U.S. over the next few months, beginning with Boston, Lincoln, Raleigh, Charleston and Southern California in the next two weeks. Join us in praising God for the volunteers who are leading these gatherings, and please pray that the events would rally more and more people to step into the fight against slavery through prayer.
  • Please pray for the open role of Vice President & Controller. IJM is seeking a talented leader to provide financial oversight for all aspects of financial reporting and compliance, accounting services, grants accounting and tax compliance. The Vice President & Controller will lead the accounting organization and is crucial in fostering financial leadership throughout the organization.

IJM Prayer Requests

“Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.”

— John 3:20

Africa

  • Pray for the IJM Gulu team as they follow up on several leads for cases of domestic violence. This year, we are conducting a pilot project in Gulu which will help us determine whether IJM can effectively use prosecution as a deterrent to domestic violence. We have yet to take on the first case, and find that women are often under a lot of pressure from their families and communities to drop cases against their partners. Pray that God would lead us to the right women, who we can walk with through their cases to see the abusers convicted. Pray also that this will provide opportunities to fight the stigma against reporting abusive partners.

Latin America

  • Lift up our Latin America teams in prayer as they fervently work to protect children from sex trafficking and sexual violence and inspire others to do the same. The nature of our work exposes our staff to stories, places and realities that are often hard to encounter and digest. Pray for emotional, physical and spiritual health so they can continue walking alongside our survivors and their families. Pray for grace, strength, wisdom and time to rest as they push against countless obstacles to pursue justice for young survivors.

South Asia

  • Praise God for 150+ children, women and men rescued from slavery at an abusive brick kiln this week and for the proactive government officials helping them resettle in freedom. Years ago, it was uncommon for local leaders to admit slavery still existed, let alone to help families in need, but this group of law enforcement officials did a fantastic job caring for the slaves in this kiln and keeping them safe. Today, the families are returning home with medical care, food supplies, new bank accounts, ID cards, police protection and special release certificates that break any bonds to their former owner. Pray for God’s continued blessing on these survivors and strong local officials, and pray for more government officials to follow their lead!

Southeast Asia

  • Pray for IJM Cambodia and IJM Bangkok as they increasingly work together on cases of labor trafficking in the Thai fishing industry. Our study among current and former Burmese and Cambodian fishermen found that trafficking of migrant fishermen on Thai fishing boats has been widespread, and there are common patterns of abuse in the industry. Many trafficking rings operate on both sides of the Thai-Cambodian border, preying upon vulnerable migrant workers and exploiting them in Thailand’s vast seafood industry where these workers face extremely difficult and dangerous working conditions, grueling hours and abuse. Please pray for IJM teams in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Bangkok, Thailand as they work hand-in-hand to support authorities in both countries to dismantle criminal networks that exploit migrant workers and bring rescue to victims.

  • Please pray for wisdom and creativity for our volunteer teams in cities across the U.S. Pray for these volunteers as they execute on their plans for the year, rallying financial resources, advocacy momentum and prayer support for the work of justice. Ask God to give them great joy as they build the movement to end slavery and stand up for the oppressed.
  • Please pray for a Social Media Marketing Manager. We’re looking for someone to inspire and rally a generation in the fight for justice using social media channels. The person in this role will create, sustain and grow a social movement to help end slavery.

IJM Prayer Requests

“Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.”

— 2 Corinthians 4:1

Africa

  • Praise God for the opportunity IJM had to participate in a Women in Leadership Conference in Uganda. An IJM Kenya aftercare staff member presented about the progress the team has made in combatting child sexual assault and shared recommendations for how the same success could be seen in Uganda. Those in attendance, including members of the judiciary and the First Lady of Uganda, expressed a strong desire to see an end to violence against women in the country. Pray that the ideas shared would encourage leaders to see violence against women and children as an issue that impacts all aspects of society and that they would be committed to ensuring a public justice system response that makes it clear this violence will not be tolerated.

Latin America

  • Please pray for the Department of Investigation of Sexual Offenses of the Guatemalan National Civil Police across Guatemala. They partner with IJM to find and protect children who have experienced or are vulnerable to sexual abuse. Pray that all their personnel will be guided by God to find, rescue and protect children who currently live in fear and shame as they suffer as victims of sexual violence. Pray for wisdom and safety as they put their lives at risk to rescue and protect others. Finally, pray that our good relationships with this department will continue to grow and to prove that justice for the poor is possible!

South Asia

  • Please pray for a large number of cases where slave owners have been charged with hate crimes against families from the bottom of the caste system. Traffickers often prey on these impoverished caste groups because they know society doesn't offer them much protection. Our legal cases can be struggles because some judges still hold prejudice against them. Pray that we could reach a breakthrough on these cases — that righteous judges would rule strongly on hate crimes and protect vulnerable, low-caste groups. Pray for convictions against these predatory slave owners and for strong sentences that show the severity of these crimes.

Southeast Asia

  • Pray for IJM Bangkok as they continue recruiting and onboarding new staff. IJM Bangkok hired a core team in 2017 and is now working to fill out the initial team in the first half of 2018. Please join us in praying for skilled, Christian professionals who are called to the work of justice and able to work well in English. Please pray for well-equipped candidates to apply for our open positions, and that we will find and identify those God calls.

  • Please pray for the elected officials who received videos from their constituents as part of our Hidden No More advocacy campaign last week. Ask God to move in their hearts, and that they would be receptive to the voices of their constituents who are asking them to protect resources that combat slavery around the world.
  • Please ask God to bring us a Senior Payroll Specialist. The Senior Payroll Specialist enables the accurate calculation of wages, deductions and withholdings and maintains records. This role also serves as a resource and provides leadership to IJM's team of payroll specialists. This position is based in the Washington, DC area.

Rebound Prayer Requests

Prayers are appreciated for our Hope Supply Drive that kicks off this week, providing an opportunity for the community of believers in Whatcom County to participate, in a small way to support Rebound's Ray of Hope Summer Program.  Please pray that local churches will agree to participate in the Hope Supply Drive and rally to support this important mission by investing into the lives of some of the County's most struggling kids.

Please pray for homeless families who are looking for an affordable place to rent.  We are working with several who are in this situation.  The need is great, but the answers are few.

Pray for families who are trying to improve their lives in order to get their children out of foster care.

Please pray for our Spring Quarter Roots Family Enrichment Program, that many more new families will join us.

For our upcoming Ray of Hope Summer Day Program, that site selection and licensing will go smoothly and that God will open doors for parents and children whose lives would benefit from participating.

Please pray for favorable outcomes from the many grants we are writing in this grant-writing season.  Rebound relies greatly on Foundation funding to continue our programs' important work in our community.

IJM Prayer Requests

Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.”

— Jeremiah 20:13

Africa

  • Pray for four boys who were victims of sexual abuse perpetrated by the owner of a children’s home where they lived in Kenya. Two of the boys testified in court about the abuse this week, and the other two will testify in May. Please pray for strength and comfort for these children as they share about the abuse they suffered at the hands of someone who should have been protecting them. Pray that the truth will be clear and that the perpetrator will be held accountable for his crimes.

Latin America

  • Today we invite you to celebrate with us because God answered our prayers! Last month we asked you to pray for Jeremías*, a survivor of sexual violence in Bolivia. He and his family have experienced much pain and sorrow, not only with the abuse he suffered, but also with the loss of his younger brother in a bike accident early in February. Praise God that justice has been served and the man who drugged and raped Jeremías has been convicted and sentenced to six years in prison. He can no longer hurt Jeremías or other children like him. Continue praying for Jeremías and his family — for peace and healing as they mourn the loss of his brother, and that they will be able to continue with their lives knowing that this man can’t hurt them anymore.

South Asia

  • Please pray for smooth logistics and creativity as our team helps build crisis counseling centers at several shelters for survivors of sex trafficking. These crisis centers will provide medical care, trauma counseling and administrative support to girls in the first hours and days after they are rescued. In building these centers, we are exploring new ways to collaborate closely with the government and improve how all survivors are supported in aftercare even if IJM was not involved in their rescue. Pray these first few centers would be a successful model that can be replicated in other cities.

Southeast Asia

  • Join us in thanking God for successful rescue operations in the Philippines! In a span of four days, IJM supported Philippine law enforcement units in conducting three operations and rescuing 13 victims of cybersex trafficking. The youngest victim was only four years old. Cybersex trafficking is a dark crime, only made possible by the digital age. Pedophiles located around the world can pay to watch and direct live sexual abuse of young boys and girls online, and victims can be exploited anywhere with just a computer and a webcam. The traumatic effects on children are devastating. Pray for these 13 rescued survivors — and the social workers who are caring for them — as they begin their journeys to healing.

  • This week, IJM staff are traveling to the Vatican to present about IJM’s work at the Ethics in Action forum on Slavery & Human Trafficking, an event for global religious leaders organized by Jeffrey Sachs — an international development expert. Please pray for IJM staff to build great relationships with religious leaders from around the world.

IJM Prayer Requests

“Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.”

— Titus 3:14

Africa

  • Pray for the IJM team in Kampala, Uganda as they transition aftercare support for land theft clients to a partner organization.Last year, IJM Kampala completed their system reform program which involves training, mentoring and support to improve how public justice system officials and service providers protect and care for widows who are victims of land theft. Pray for our staff who have walked alongside these widows and their families, often for years, that they would feel at peace during the transition. Pray for our clients that they would understand the reasons for the transition and would feel cared for and supported.

Latin America

  • Please pray for our Dominican Republic team as they work on a case involving a French citizen accused of sexually exploiting at least four young boys — the youngest survivor was 10 years old at the time of rescue. This case has been open for about three years, and the defense attorney has done everything possible to prevent the case from going to trial. He is pushing a settlement now and has even been offering the survivors’ families money to agree to the settlement. Pray that this settlement does not take place, as it could result in a weak conviction. Pray that the survivors’ families would not give in to the pressure but would continue seeking justice for their children, and that the accused would be deported to his home country to face trial.

South Asia

  • Praise God for 32 survivors rescued from slavery at a brick kiln this week, and please pray for ongoing obstacles in their case. These families were toiling in a brick kiln until IJM and our close partner NGO arrived to rescue them on Wednesday. The families have been brought to safety, but their former owner is exerting his power in the community to influence local government officials, who are now delaying giving the rescued families crucial documents to mark their freedom and protect them long-term. We need God’s intervention to change the hearts of these officials so they do the right thing, seek justice and protect these children, women and men in their first critical days in freedom.

Southeast Asia

  • Join us in praising God for three successful operations in the Philippines over the past week, which resulted in 10 children being rescued from cybersex trafficking. We are grateful for the collaboration between Philippines authorities and international law enforcement agencies that led us to find and rescue these boys and girls and to arrest their abusers. Pray that those who abused and exploited these children would face consequences for the crime. Pray for the journey of healing that lies ahead for each of these survivors as they begin receiving aftercare services, including trauma therapy and medical care.

  • Please ask God to bring the right people to join IJM’s team, both for positions at our Headquarters and in our Field Offices around the world. Pray for wisdom as our Recruiting Team reviews applications and interviews candidates, seeking to bring the women and men on board who will help make justice for the poor unstoppable.

Our apologies for sending these prayer requests a few days late. We will return to our normal Saturday morning send time next weekend.
