IJM Prayer Requests

“A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”

— Isaiah 42:3-4

Africa

  • Thank you for praying with us this month for the IJM Uganda team as they expand casework beyond land theft to address other forms of violence against women. Last week you prayed for the Gulu team as they evaluated cases of domestic violence, and we saw the first ever conviction for domestic violence in an IJM case! Please continue to pray for Akello* — as we shared on May 5, she endured abuse for 10 years of her marriage before a particularly violent attack pushed her to bring legal charges against her husband. Please pray for her and her family's healing, and for wisdom for the IJM team as they work closely with her.

Latin America

  • Please pray for two sisters in Bolivia, both survivors of sexual violence, as they prepare to give their testimony . Pray for safe travels for them and their mother as they come from their remote community to the city for the court case. Pray for God’s peace in the girls’ hearts as they prepare and bravely share their stories, and pray for wisdom for our team in helping them prepare. Pray that the prosecutor will use their testimony to make a just call against their alleged perpetrator, a former teacher. Finally, pray for great clarity and communication at this hearing — one of the sisters will be sharing her testimony in Spanish and the other one will be using an interpreter as she is sharing in Aymara (a native language).

South Asia

  • Praise God for the conviction of three brothel owners after a six-year trial, and please pray for peace for all involved in the case. This husband, wife and sister-in-law had been selling five girls and young women for sex in a dirty hotel, until IJM and anti-trafficking police staged a rescue operation in August 2012. Now, they will each spend 10 years in jail for their crimes. Pray they would accept what they have done and find inner redemption, and pray the news of these convictions would be an encouragement to the survivors who are now living freely.

Southeast Asia

  • Pray for the IJM teams seeking to rescue victims trafficked into Thailand’s fishing industry. Pray also for favor and wisdom as the team builds relationships with police and prosecutors in both Thailand and Cambodia (where many of the traffickers target victims). Pray that we would see an end to modern slavery in this industry

  • Please pray for the final 2018 Local Prayer Gatherings unfolding in Dayton, Cincinnati and Atlanta next week. Join us in praising God for the volunteers who are leading these gatherings, and please pray that the events would rally more and more people to step into the fight against slavery through prayer.
  • Please pray for great candidates for the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Houston, Austin and San Antonio. The person in this role has the opportunity to meaningfully engage donors in our work, showing how their joyful financial partnership can bring freedom and rescue to thousands.

IJM Prayer Requests

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.”

— Ephesians 6:14-15

Africa

  • Pray for the Gulu, Uganda team as they review referred domestic violence cases. The team took on the first two cases in March as part of a pilot project that will run through 2019. Pray for them to be able to collect all the information they need to make a decision on whether to take on the referred cases, and pray for the survivors and their children as they make difficult decisions about bringing charges against abusive partners.

Latin America

  • Please lift up the nation of Guatemala in your prayers today. Last weekend “Fuego” — one of Latin America’s most active volcanos — erupted, resulting in dozens of people dead and hundreds more injured. Pray for the approximately 3,000 residents who have been evacuated and are in temporary shelters. Pray especially for the children who have lost loved ones and are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Finally, pray for the survivors of sexual violence we serve and their families, for our team and their families and for our local partners. Pray for peace, health and protection as the air clears out and courts and police return to normal activities.

South Asia

  • Please pray for a safe recovery for a 17-year-old girl rescued from sex trafficking last week in a major city. She had been trafficked across the country under the promise of a good job, but was instead sold for sex in a dingy brothel. She was abused by up to nine men a day, in a room of four beds separated by sheets and twine. After police and IJM rescued her, she’s now in a temporary aftercare shelter getting the crisis care she needs. We are hoping to help her return home soon, where she has a one-year-old child. Pray for her physical and emotional recovery, and for strong evidence in the legal case against the brothel manager who exploited her.

Southeast Asia

  • Please pray for the IJM Cambodia team as they join with other organizations to train Cambodian police. These trainings enhance local officers’ abilities to recognize and stop human trafficking where it occurs. Pray for a fruitful session that leads to more freedom for victims and justice for those who oppress the weak.

  • Please pray for IJM’s international advancement offices in Canada, Australia, Germany, the U.K. and the Netherlands. Pray for God’s favor, wisdom and creativity as they seek to rally financial resources, advocacy momentum and prayer support for the work of justice in their countries.

IJM Prayer Requests

“Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression.”

— Deuteronomy 26:7

Africa

  • Pray for our team in Western Uganda that is working to support and coach government partners as they respond to cases of child sexual assault. The IJM team is small, but has provided trainings and advice to equip police and social welfare officers with the tools they need to better serve the remote communities where they work. Pray for energy for the IJM staff, and for encouragement for our partners there as they apply what they’ve learned to help young children and their families.

Latin America

  • On May 28, the Vice-Presidency of the Dominican Republic awarded Doña Evelyn* a “mother of value” award, which recognizes women who overcome obstacles. Her daughter is a sex trafficking survivor. Doña Evelyn and her husband have faithfully and relentlessly sought justice for their daughter, and with IJM’s support they have overcome many trials. But a few weeks ago, the judge overseeing the case declared the men who allegedly raped her and sold her to other men for sex “not guilty.” Please pray for Evelyn and her family so they won’t get weary in this process. Pray for God’s favor and grace over them and our team as we appeal the prosecutor’s decision.

South Asia

  • Praise God for a string of rescue operations this week that freed several families from bonded labor slavery. IJM worked with a brand-new government official who led all three operations on his first days in office. All of these families had been suffering for years in local brick kilns and had faced disturbing physical, verbal and emotional abuse. And after they were safe, this lead official also closed down 10 nearby brick kilns that were operating illegally. Praise God for his proactivity and understanding of modern-day slavery, and pray for these families recovering today.

Southeast Asia

  • Please pray for the IJM team in Northern Thailand advocating for access to citizenship on behalf of hundreds of thousands of stateless people living in the region. Though these people have a legal right to citizenship or legal status, they have not historically been recognized as Thai people. The team is spending intensive time in the Mae Hong Son province in the northern part of the country to survey stateless people living in villages and districts within the province, train volunteers in each area to help people in their district apply for the legal status they are eligible for and support government officials to champion these rights for stateless people living in their jurisdictions.

  • Praise God for the 101 new staff members, interns and fellows who will be joining us for orientation at IJM Headquarters this week!Thank God for bringing these talented women and men to join our team, and pray for creativity and strength as they begin their work. In particular, please pray for the team members who will be moving to the field for their positions. Pray for smooth logistics and physical and emotional stamina as they travel and arrive in the field.
