Changing the cultural norm: Commerical Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is not consensual sex, it's exploitation.

According to Ending Exploitation Collaborativesex buying is non-consensual sex. Many would say that's not what our culture thinks and not how many other societies view or have viewed prostitution. But rather than prostitution being "the world's oldest profession" is it instead "the world's oldest oppression?"

Consider this: The Ending Exploitation Collaborative says, "Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is the use of someone else’s body for sexual purposes in exchange for considerations that are not sexual. In CSE, there are two groups of exploiters:

  • Buyers pay or trade to use the bodies of prostituted people for their own gratification.
  • Traffickers use the bodies of prostituted people for their own profit and self-aggrandizement.

The practice of CSE dehumanizes those who are exploited, turning them into objects whose value is seen in terms of the profit and gratification provided to the exploiters."

Not only is it exploitative in general terms, CSE also targets vulnerable populations.  The Ending Exploitation Collaborative explains, "Social and economic inequalities make people vulnerable to being exploited. Populations that are often targeted are the LGBTQIA+ community, people of color, the homeless, people with disabilities, and children. This subordinate status that funnels members of marginalized groups into the commercial sex industry is both sexualized and commodified through CSE. Gender, race, ethnicity, physical ability, age and sexual orientation all become fetishized consumables for individual buyers that reinforce oppressive stereotypes."

The article concludes with this thought: "Because of these factors, sex buying is non-consensual sex. Consent to sexual activity must be freely given. If there is pressure or coercion to engage in sexual activity, it is non-consensual. Economic coercion precludes the possibility that sexual activity is consensual and mutual. If you have to pay someone, it is not mutual; consent is never freely given in prostitution. (emphasis added)
