Men of Dignity launches in Whatcom County

Action steps against trafficking: Check out the Men of Dignity website and pray for the Men of Dignity rally on 5/5/18!

Men of Dignity is a ministry focused primarily on equipping and imploring the men of God to intentionally pursue holiness and out of that help eradicate trafficking. Originally a sub-ministry of Engedi Refuge Ministries with Aaron Newcomb as its head, Men of Dignity is now becoming it's own non-profit with Joshua Parriera as Executive Director.

Joshua says, "Men of Dignity aims to get the men of God to love Him first and foremost with a pure heart and to seek His Kingdom above all else, and through that to intentionally engage the battle over our souls in the arena of pornography and sexual exploitation."

He further explains, "This is not only an anti-porn ministry, even though the enemy has been using porn to ravage our churches for years now. This is more of a pro-Jesus thing.  We want to partner with local churches first to motivate men of God to see how amazing Jesus is and to live for Him fully.   Secondly, Men of Dignity seeks to fight pornography, sex trafficking, and the exploitation of women and children."

All men ages 13 and older are invited to attend this week's Men of Dignity Rally at Hillcrest Chapel, in Bellingham, WA on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 6:30 pm.  The evening will focus on rallying men to love & live for Jesus.  There will be worship, a forum of speakers, and a message about the freedom of Christ.  Representatives from partner ministries including Prodigal, Band of Brothers, and Celebrate Recovery will also be there.

Joshua says, "The Disciples said, “We have tasted, we have seen, we have touched. We know that the Lord is good.” They were willing to give up everything once they met who Jesus really was - He was better than anything else. Would you say the same? This is your time. You have been on a journey and God has brought you where you are at for a purpose. It is our prayer that you will have an encounter with Jesus & never be the same. We get to choose Jesus or sin and our choice has consequences, both now & later... Jesus is the better choice! Let’s make the right one every day."

I'm excited to see this ministry launch and grow.  Will you pray with me for Men of Dignity?
Sue Ann

Wondering what you can do to help fight trafficking?
A simple way to take part is by sharing the following information with parents of teens.
Let them know that they need to keep an eye out for questionable ads like the one below.
It might be a lure into trafficking!

Kris Devens from Alexandria, Minnesota shared this on Facebook on 4/14/18.  "According to the West Central MN Human Trafficking Task Force, this is an example of a sex trafficking scam for young teens! This exact ad was used in Florida and has spread to other states.  Don't be fooled, this IS happening in small town Minnesota. Stay aware and stay diligent friends."

"I Didn't Realize..." video taped on 4/14/18

Young people in Whatcom County care about the issue of trafficking and are willing to publicly say so.  Nine young people ranging from age 11 to 18 showed up this weekend to say their lines for the Hope4Justice video titled, "I Didn't Realize..."    Many thanks to our actors: Lena, Juda, Ezra, Samantha, Nathan, Marlee, Paige, DeeDee and Caden.  You rock!  (We also appreciate the four moms that drove their children to the video location.)

Thanks are also due to the awesome group of volunteers that took care of all of the details -- big and small --  in planning and production: Kristin, Sherae, Karen, Betty, Bob, Rose, Lisa, & Jesse.

And HUGE THANKS to Kyle, our videographer.  He is a WWU student that volunteered to create this video.  We're so glad he's willing to contribute his time and talent to fighting trafficking with Hope4Justice.

Twenty-two people working together to do what they can to combat trafficking in our little corner of the world. Well done!

Victories against trafficking this week

This week's action steps:

  • Sign up and attend the Skagit Coalition Against Trafficking conference this Wednesday, 4/11/18.  Details below.

  •  Whatcom County high school, WCC and WWU students must turn in applications for the STEP scholarship by 4/15/18.

Something BIG happened this week!

On Friday, April 6, 2018 media headlines  announced that Backpage.com had been shut down.  Yahoo.com said, "U.S. law enforcement agencies have seized the sex marketplace website Backpage.com as part of an enforcement action by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to a posting on the Backpage website on Friday."

The website, used primarily to sell sex, has been a huge money maker.  "Launched in 2004, Backpage has affiliates across the country and around the world, and by 2014 brought in annual revenue of $135 million," reports Yahoo.com.  It's fair to say that a lot of that money was made by selling underage minors.  "The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has told Congress that nearly three quarters of the cases submitted to the center relate to ads posted on the site."

Backpage hasn't cared that minors -- or adults -- were sexually  exploited.  They fought back against legal challenges and  took advantage of a loophole in the law, raking in millions without regard to the horrific reality that was happening.  But the law has changed.  "The U.S. Senate passed (the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act or FOSTA) legislation last month making it easier for state prosecutors and sex-trafficking victims to sue social media networks, advertisers and others that fail to keep sex trafficking and other exploitative materials off their platforms."

It's a big victory in the fight against trafficking.

Also, there was a huge victory this week for a young child whose father was trying to sell her on Craigslist.  An online source,  ia.meaww.com reported  "...that a Wisconsin father and US Army man who tried to pimp his 4-year-old daughter on classified advertisements site Craigslist in 2015 was sentenced to 60 years in prison last week."

A four year old pimped out on Craigslist.  By her father.  Unbelievable.

However, change is happening on Craigslist, too.  In response to the FOSTA legislation, Craigslist has announced that it will shut down its personals section which has been used to solicit sex in the past.

The evil of trafficking hasn't been eliminated but at least there are some positive actions being taken against it.  Let's pray for more.
Sue Ann

"God is in the business of using the unlikely to perform the holy"

This week's action steps:

  • Sign up for the Skagit Coalition Against Trafficking conference on 4/11/18.  Details below.

  • Whatcom County high school, WCC and WWU students: Turn in applications for the STEP scholarship by 4/15/18.

In his book, "The Good News About Injustice" Gary Haugen, President and CEO of International Justice Mission (IJM) says "God is in the business of using the unlikely to perform the holy."  As an example, he cites Abraham, "an old man with few relatives and no children."  God used him to establish a nation whose descendants would outnumber the stars.  Another example is David,  a "scrawny shepherd boy who didn't even know how to dress for battle."   And then there are the followers of Jesus.  Gary says, "To build the church of Jesus Christ and to turn the world upside down, God worked through the most unlikely crew of humble women and common fishermen."

These examples are intended to show us that God uses real people to accomplish His purposes.  Not the rich and powerful and not the wisest or most accomplished.  He uses everyday people like you and me.  With Hope4Justice, this means people of all ages with varied talents and skills but all with a heart to fight injustice, including:

  • A retired teacher who asked God, "What now, Lord?"
  • A 15 year-old high school freshman responding to a teacher's challenge to get involved with a cause
  • A busy young mom with little time
  • A  20-something college student studying communication and videography
  • A middle-aged employee of a local company
  • Young people ages 11-18 willing to act on their beliefs by being in a video about trafficking

When it comes to the fight against injustice, Gary says, "We are all qualified to seek justice. God is in the business of using the 'foolish' and the 'weak' to accomplish his divine will on earth, and that simply means that I am qualified to be on his team.  We all are.  And when it comes to seeking justice for the hurting in our world, he doesn't have a special roster.  He intends to use you and me. He doesn't have any other plan.  In fact it is precisely for such good works that we were created; they don't save us or make us righteous before God, but they allow us to fulfill the godly purpose for which God created us.  (Eph. 2:10).

Each of us has unique talents, skills, and abilities to use in this task.  What are yours?  How are you using them?

Sue Ann
