“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
— Proverbs 31:8-9
Praise God for the arrest of a man in Gulu, Uganda last week for domestic violence. Upon arrest, he was charged with grievous harm. His wife, Betty,* had left her previous husband because he strangled her, and she suffered from violence and threats in this new marriage for two years before she reported the abuse to local authorities and IJM took the case. Pray for Betty and her three children, for safety, peace and healing from trauma. Learn more about Betty’s case and combatting domestic violence in Uganda.
Praise God for an incredible first four months of the year protecting children from sexual violence in Bolivia, where our team fiercely advocated for survivors, represented them in court and ultimately secured eight convictions! In two of the cases, the perpetrators were teachers in rural communities, so the families faced strong resistance from the community. Thankfully, both perpetrators have now been convicted. Please pray for the survivors of these cases as they continue their personal journeys of healing.
Praise God for two successful rescue operations led by IJM’s faithful partners over the weekend. In the first case, a network of former slaves helped the government rescue 28 people who were being forced to chop wood in terrible conditions. In the second, our partner NGO helped rescue a 10-year-old boy who was made to graze hundreds of goats to repay his family’s debt of only $140. Today, this boy and these rescued families are recovering in safety and getting the care they need. Please pray for their healing and safety, and praise God for our partners moving the anti-slavery movement forward. Read more about these rescue operations .
Please pray for this week’s final sessions in a series of trainings that IJM is facilitating in Chiang Mai province in Thailand. On May 8 and 10, IJM’s team will finish a curriculum of training on responding to cases of sexual violence against children. We anticipate a total of around 75 local partners will participate at each session, including stakeholders from the Thai government and local NGOs. Please pray that these trainings are effective in building partners’ capacity to respond to these cases of abuse. And as capacity is increased, pray that these partners will work together to protect children across Northern Thailand from sexual violence.
