IJM Prayer Request

“Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.”

— Jeremiah 20:13

Africa

Praise God for a collaborative workshop held with Police Scotland and the Uganda police in Gulu, Uganda. As IJM increases collaboration with police to investigate and bring cases against perpetrators of domestic violence, this workshop presents an opportunity to brainstorm and learn from other law enforcement experiences in dealing with the same crimes. Police Scotland have conducted trainings on women- and child-friendly police procedures in many countries around the world, and imparting these trainings to the Ugandan police will help make them better able to respond to domestic violence reports in the community. Pray for the Ugandan police to continue the pursuit of excellence in response to domestic violence crimes. Watch a Ugandan news outlet's video of the training on YouTube.

Please pray for our legal team in the Dominican Republic as they prepare for multiple hearings in the next couple of weeks. Pray for strength and mental clarity for our lawyers who, despite experiencing multiple setbacks throughout the proceedings of these cases, are still showing up to court; one of our consistent challenges has been the continual rescheduling of hearings due to absences. Pray that everyone who needs to be in the hearings would show up in coming weeks. Ask God to use all evidence collected by local authorities and the persistence of our staff to move the judge’s heart to bring justice for children and young women survivors of sex trafficking in these cases.

South Asia

Please pray for strong convictions against alleged slave owners in our project areas. Our partners in the public justice system have been increasingly proactive in rescuing families from bonded labor slavery, but trials against traffickers and slave owners can still drag on for years in the overburdened courts. Please pray for several upcoming trials to move more quickly and reach strong sentences that will deter others from enslaving the poor. We really need breakthrough in these convictions to prove to the community that justice for the poor is possible.

Southeast Asia

Join us in praising God that 11 children in the Philippines are now safe! Through three operations, Philippine authorities arrested five suspects for offering to live-stream sexual exploitation of the children online for foreign predators. The rescued survivors — who range in age from 2 to 17 — are now in the care of social workers. Pray for these survivors, and for the aftercare professionals who are beginning to walk with them to help them recover from the trauma they’ve suffered.

Please pray for the IJM campus chapter student leaders who are calling their peers to join the fight against injustice. Pray that God would grant these students wisdom, energy and creativity, and that they would boldly mobilize their generation to end slavery in their lifetime.

IJM Prayer Request

“‘Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.”

— Jeremiah 1:8

Africa

Pray for more aftercare partners and available space for children rescued in Ghana this year. Our dream is to rescue as many children as possible out of slavery in the fishing industry, but we cannot do this if we do not have a safe place for them to recover. Pray for the ability to identify good partners who will provide the environment these children need to heal.

Latin America

Pray for a series of trainings happening in the coming weeks and months in Guatemala. Our team will advise judges and prosecutors on alternative ways to gather key evidence needed to prosecute cases of sexual violence that don’t require the “ocular inspection” — a practice where child survivors are asked to return to the crime scene and re-tell their abuse as part of the investigation. Pray for IJM staff to find favor among the training attendees. Ask God to prepare the prosecutors’ and judges’ hearts to receive this advice and end this practice.

South Asia

Praise God for three successful rescue operations last weekend that brought more than 70 children, women and men to freedom! IJM supported local law enforcement and our partners in rescuing families from a brick kiln, a sugarcane farm and a coconut-fiber processing plant (where fibers are turned into ropes and mats). We were amazed to see local leaders step up boldly on behalf of these victims, and to see the victims speak up boldly themselves to share the truth in front of their oppressors! Ask for God’s blessings throughout the follow-up on these cases in the next few weeks, and for rest for the IJM teams taking part in this wave of freedom.

Southeast Asia

Please continue to pray for an ongoing trial in Thailand . The accused has allegedly trafficked Cambodian migrant workers into forced labor in the Gulf of Thailand, and he is believed to be a key player in a network of recruiters, brokers and traffickers stretching from impoverished villages across Cambodia all the way to fishing ports along Thailand’s coast. Thai authorities arrested him in 2018, and he now faces charges for his crimes. As the trial moves forward, continue to pray that his victims would receive justice, and that he would be restrained from exploiting other vulnerable workers. Pray also that this case would be a milestone in tackling this network of criminals, believed to be responsible for trafficking hundreds — possibly thousands — of vulnerable men into the fishing industry.

Please pray for our volunteers and advocates across the U.S. who are meeting with their elected officials this month, asking them to support legislation that can help end slavery and violence. Pray that the logistics of securing these meetings would go smoothly, and for God to give the advocates joy and clarity as they speak up for the poor and the oppressed. Please also ask God to move in the hearts of these elected officials, drawing them to use their power in the fight for justice.

IJM Prayer Request

“It will be a sign and witness to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them.”

— Isaiah 19:20

Africa

Please pray for the satellite office we are opening in the northern area of Lake Volta in Ghana. This location will make it possible for us to more effectively address slavery in the fishing industry because it is in the north where access to the lake is far more challenging and the trafficking is at its worst. We want to ensure that there is no part of the lake where traffickers can hide enslaved children. Pray for the right people in the office, for the right partners, for police and prosecutors who will be taking these cases and for new aftercare homes in the area.

Latin America

Please pray for an upcoming trial against a suspect accused of sexually exploiting four minors — among them his 13-year-old daughter. Earlier in February, our team in the Dominican Republic assisted local authorities in a rescue operation hoping to find one specific minor. The night of the rescue, we found her, and three other minors! Please pray for their restoration as they start the long process of healing. Also pray that the proper court procedures will be followed in order to ensure justice.

South Asia

Praise God for a highly successful training conference we conducted with anti-trafficking police in one of the states where we work. IJM staff helped these officers better understand the tactics traffickers use and how they can gather better evidence to make legal cases stronger. We also helped them better understand victim trauma and how to interview trafficked women and girls in a sensitive way. Overall, the officers were very engaged and excited to put their skills into practice. Pray for successful rescues to come!

Pray for IJM’s opportunity to join a working group in Thailand that will evaluate the civil registration system for inaccessible populations. Since the early 2000s, our team in Chiang Mai has worked with thousands of hill tribe members in Northern Thailand to help them receive the legal status that they rightfully deserve. Through this working group, alongside leaders in the Thai government and other civil society members, we hope to help fix the barriers that continue to keep vulnerable people groups, like these hill tribe populations, from receiving their citizenship and accessing the benefits that it offers. Pray for wisdom and the development of solutions that will bring lasting relief and protection to vulnerable people in dozens of countries throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Please pray for energy and creativity as our Church Mobilization Team begins rallying churches to participate in Freedom SundayThrough this campaign, churches around the world will dedicate their September 22 service to preaching about God’s heart for justice and to calling congregants to join the fight against slavery and injustice. Pray that God would move mightily in the hearts of His people around the world, drawing thousands of congregations to speak up for the poor and the oppressed by hosting Freedom Sunday at their churches.

IJM Prayer Request

“How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ and again, ‘The LORD will judge his people.’ It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

— Hebrews 10:29-31

Africa

Praise God for a successful community dialogue in a low-income neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya. This event was organized to strengthen police and community relations in order to address police brutality. Senior police officers, the director of public prosecutions and the director of criminal investigations (DCI) all attended the event and heard the stories of people who had lost loved ones to extrajudicial police killings. The DCI stood up at the event and said, “I stand before you and declare that anybody, be it under my command or myself, that will ever cover-up for someone who has killed an innocent person [...] May God himself curse me. No one will ever cover for a police officer who kills under my watch.” Praise God for people in power standing up against police abuse, and pray for continued movement in Kenya toward a police force that protects and doesn’t abuse the poor.

Rejoice with our Bolivia team for the signing of their first collaborative casework partnership agreement! This partnership is key to extending the protective and restorative services that IJM has provided in Bolivia thus far. It opens the door to equip a local organization and improve their capacity to provide support to child victims of sexual violence and their families. Please pray that as our team meets with this new organization, God will provide us with clear strategies in order to best support the people in their community.

South Asia

Please continue to pray for ongoing investigations in one of the sex trafficking operations you prayed for last week. The two rescued teen girls have been opening up about their stories and giving police new leads for other potential victims, suspects and locations tied to a private sex trafficking network. Police were able to arrest another suspected trafficker this week, and they are continuing to follow up on new information. Pray that we find every girl being sold by this network and can end their reign of abuse.

Southeast Asia

This week, a 21-year-old young woman in the Philippines pled guilty to trafficking children and faces 15 years in prison. Before her arrest, she had offered to live-stream the sexual abuse of three young girls, including her six-year-old niece. Pray that in His infinite mercy, God would bring this young woman to repentance. Pray for healing and restoration in the lives of these three young survivors. And pray for strength for the victims’ families and community, as they seek to repair what is broken and keep the children safe from further exploitation.

Please lift up the local prayer gatherings happening in communities across the U.S. over the next few months, beginning with Orlando later this month. Join us in praising God for the volunteers who are leading these gatherings, and please pray that the events would rally more and more people to step into the fight against slavery through prayer.

“They will know that I am the LORD, when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from those who enslaved them.”

— Ezekiel 34:27b

Africa

This past week, IJM held a conference for a large fishermen’s association in Ghana to explain the anti-trafficking law and call on them to surrender any child slaves they are currently using. Pray that the word will spread in the fishing community about the consequences of abusing children and using them for slave labor, and that many will be convicted to release the children that they have enslaved.

Latin America

Praise God for committed local partners who are eager to learn and be better equipped to support women and children survivors of violence in El Salvador. Last week, our team and a local partner organization held strategic planning sessions. Please pray that God will give both teams guidance and clear communications as we grow together in this partnership. Ask God for his favor over this new relationship so the most vulnerable can have access to the care and protection they desperately need.

South Asia

Praise God for five teen girls rescued from sex trafficking in two rescue operations this week. IJM teams in two cities worked with anti-trafficking police on Monday and Tuesday to infiltrate private sex trafficking networks that were selling girls in private apartments. In one instance, the suspected trafficker was one girl’s own mother. Please pray for these girls as they settle into aftercare homes and begin to heal from the trauma they have endured. Ask for God’s wisdom as IJM and police finish documenting evidence in these cases and move them toward prosecution, so that justice can be served.

Thai authorities arrested him in 2018, and he now faces charges for his crimes. Pray that the trial would progress quickly and close successfully, bringing justice to his victims and sending a message of deterrence to other trafficking criminals.

Praise God for survivors who are leading the justice movement in their communities and around the world. These survivors are sharing their stories, calling on governments and individuals to protect people from violence. Please ask God to pour out resilience and joy on these survivor leaders, as talking about their experiences can be challenging. And ask God to grant IJM wisdom as we support these survivors in the process of sharing their stories.
