IJM Prayer Request

“I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.”

— Psalm 140:12

Africa

Pray for IJM Kampala’s engagement with partners in Uganda. As our colleagues continue to press forward in our new casework combatting violence against women and children, please ask God to lead us to the right partners who will help us bring cases to court and provide for the needs of survivors.

Latin America

Praise God for an exciting month for our team in the Dominican Republic. We recently launched an eight-session workshop focused on increasing local capacity to provide aftercare services to child survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. Please pray for our team as we collaborate with UNICEF and CONANI (The Dominican Child Welfare Agency) to provide this critical training. Pray also for all participants to put the content into practice to ensure that survivors are healing well!

South Asia

Praise God for two young brothers rescued this week from slavery at a cattle ranch. The boys were separated from their mother for two years and forced to tend 40 cows without adequate sleep, food or shelter. Their mother desperately reported the case to IJM after her frequent pleas to the farm owner failed. Today, the family is reunited and the boys are receiving aftercare to help them readjust to freedom. Praise God for the proactive government officials who led this crucial rescue and pray for this family as they spend time together again.

Southeast Asia

Pray for law enforcement and prosecutors in the Philippines who completed a training this week on combatting cybersex trafficking of children. Pray that the trainees retain what they have learned and translate it into their day-to-day work. Pray that the group is now better equipped to fight the crime in their country, and that this course would motivate authorities to relentlessly work to protect children. And pray that the training would lead to real rescues of victims and accountability for those who are exploiting vulnerable children!

IJM Prayer Request

“Arise, Lord, do not let mortals triumph; let the nations be judged in your presence. Strike them with terror, Lord; let the nations know they are only mortal.”

— Psalm 9:19-20

Africa

Pray for the communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo as they are experiencing the second largest and second deadliest Ebola outbreak in history. This week, the outbreak crossed the border into Western Uganda. Pray for all of the communities and individuals at risk, as well as for the government and health workers who are responding. Pray for comfort, peace and protection for the families who have lost loved ones.

Latin America

Praise God for a great opportunity to provide critical training to 28 local staff and volunteers from the Guatemalan Red Cross. Last week, IJM staff led a two-day training for volunteers and staff who serve across the country. Participants learned about the prevalence of sexual violence in their country, best practices to provide crisis intervention, and how to use an IJM tool called “Guardian,” a comic book designed to reach children and empower them on topics of prevention and breaking the silence. Please continue praying for these 28 volunteers as they serve and support survivors of sexual violence in their communities.

South Asia

Praise God for two recent convictions that helped secure justice for a teenage girl who was trafficked for sex. This man and woman had trafficked 16-year-old Gita* from her impoverished village to one of South Asia’s largest red-light districts. Once she was rescued, IJM helped her move into a loving aftercare home and stay strong during the legal trial. After nearly four years in court, a judge finally convicted both suspects and sentenced them to 10 years in prison and a hefty fine. Praise God for justice served in this case, and pray that the news would encourage Gita as she continues to rebuild confidence for the future.

Southeast Asia

In a precedent-setting decision, the Thai government awarded substantial victim compensation from the government’s trafficking in persons fund to five Cambodian survivors of labor trafficking. These survivors, rather than staying in government-run shelters in Thailand throughout the legal process, were able to return to their homes in Cambodia but traveled back to Thailand to participate freely in the case. The survivors received compensation calculated at the Thai minimum wage rate for each day they were exploited in the Thai fishing industry, plus additional compensation. Praise God for this decision and the encouraging progress it represents in protecting and defending victims of trafficking throughout the region. Also pray that this decision would empower other victims to bring their cases forward and pursue justice against those who exploited them.

IJM Prayer Request

“So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.”

— Matthew 10:26

Africa

Praise God for two successful arrests of domestic violence perpetrators in Uganda. In both cases, the men had been beating their wives for years. The IJM Uganda Community Relations Officer said this in response to these arrests: “I’m very happy to see that what seemed impossible is happening. This is a community that never believed that anyone could be arrested for assaulting a woman in a relationship. It’s unheard of. But we are making it possible. We are living through history. We thank God for this and pray for continued justice!”

Latin America

Pray for more open doors for our Bolivia team as they continue to reach out to local organizations to develop strategic partnerships to ignite a movement of justice in the country. The more local professionals are equipped to provide adequate legal and aftercare services to survivors of sexual violence and bring perpetrators to justice, the more sustainable change will be achieved in this nation. Pray that our teams are able to identify and train more local partners who are willing to learn and contextualize IJM’s model to help protect and restore victims of sexual violence.

South Asia

Praise God for 15 people, including six children, rescued from a rice mill where they had been enslaved for four years. The families that were rescued had taken a loan of less than $300, and after four years of work they were told that not only had they not paid it off, it had nearly doubled. Praise God for the good work of government officials, and pray for these families as they begin a new life of freedom.

Southeast Asia

Join us in asking God to bring urgent rescue to vulnerable migrant workers trapped in slavery in the Thai fishing industry. As we work with our partners in the region, pray that God would bring cases of trafficking to light and embolden trafficking victims to come forward. Pray also that we are able to support Thai law enforcement effectively, so that together we can find and rescue victims, even as they’re moving between ports and trapped on fishing boats miles away from shore.

IJM Prayer Request

“When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

— Leviticus 19:33-34

Africa

Praise God that 23 children were rescued out of slavery in the Ghana fishing industry. This complex rescue operation has unfolded over multiple weeks, with 21 boys and two girls rescued from the same community since the end of April. Pray for the children as they begin the healing process, for them to know that they are safe and protected.

Latin America

Please pray for the nation of El Salvador where our team continues to pursue justice for women and children victims of violence. On Thursday, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit the country, creating panic and disrupting residents. Seven aftershocks were also reported. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported by local authorities so far. Please continue to pray for our staff and especially for people living close to the epicenter, that they will continue to be safe.

South Asia

Ask for God’s direction and wisdom as we seek out new grassroots NGO partners to help expand our anti-slavery movement. Working with partners has helped us sharpen IJM’s model for combating human trafficking and reach whole new communities where we could never go on our own. Pray that we could build even stronger relationships with grassroots NGOs who want to help rescue victims of trafficking in their areas, and that we would get the funding to help these partners flourish.

Southeast Asia

Thank God that three teenagers in the Philippines saw justice this week as their abuser was convicted and sentenced to 21 years in prison. The trafficker pled guilty after authorities caught her offering to sexually abuse children and livestream it online in exchange for a payment from a foreign predator. Pray for continued healing and restoration for the rescued girls as they hear and process this news.
