IJM Prayer Request

April 27, 2019

“He has shown you, oh man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, to walk humbly with your God.”

— Micah 6:8

Africa

Praise God for a recent case in Kenya in which four innocent people were acquitted of wrongful accusations. Pray for our teams as they work with public prosecutors to develop a standard for charging criminals that will help cases with no evidence to be quickly identified and thrown out. This has the potential to bring freedom to many who have been falsely accused of a crime and forced to wait in prison for a trial, often without legal representation.

Latin America

Pray for our team rolling out a complex new case management system in partnership with the government in Guatemala. We hope this system will make cases more efficient and help courts and social services better serve children who survived sexual violence. Pray for wisdom for our team and good relationships as they collaborate on this system.

South Asia

Please pray for breakthrough in our efforts to rescue girls from private sex trafficking networks, which exploit victims in homes or apartments rather than traditional brothels. These networks are technologically savvy and highly sophisticated, and they can move trafficking victims quickly if they suspect police are nearby. We are constantly learning how to track and intercept these criminals, but we need God’s intervention and breakthrough this year to set girls free. Pray for a flood of successful operations in the next few months to help disrupt these predatory networks.

Southeast Asia

Pray that six open positions on our IJM Cambodia team would be filled by candidates who bring the right experience, energy and new capacities to our team.

Please join us in praising God for the over 1,000 churches that have already signed up to participate in Freedom Sunday this year. Pray for wisdom and creativity as these churches prepare for Freedom Sunday, where they will dedicate a service to preaching about God’s heart for justice and will call their congregants to join the fight.

IJM Prayer Request

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

— Matthew 5:9

Africa

Pray for our staff and vulnerable widows in Northern Uganda, as this is peak season for land disputes. Our team is on high alert, investigating reports of land theft and ensuring that our clients are protected. Crime rates and theft are also known to rise during holidays, so pray for our team to be able to celebrate Easter with their families in safety and peace.

Latin America

Praise God for a 25-year sentence against a former military member who is now being held accountable for raping his stepdaughter in Bolivia. For years, this man used his position of influence and economic power to sexually abuse his stepdaughter, but this prison sentence means he is no longer able to hurt her. IJM Bolivia walked alongside this survivor and her family for three years, providing her with therapy and representing her in court. Please pray for the survivor, now 18 years old, who is starting her studies to become a P.E. teacher. Pray for God’s blessings over her studies and for a great community around her to continue her healing.

South Asia

Ask for God’s comfort and peace for a young family who tragically lost their six-year-old son to disease just before they could be rescued from bonded labor slavery this year. They had been trafficked into a brick kiln and were forced to work for months when their son came down with an infection. The slave owner refused to let them seek help, and the boy soon passed away. Another laborer managed to make a desperate call to IJM, and we helped coordinate their rescue. Please pray for this grieving family as they readjust to life in freedom and mourn the loss of their son. Pray also for follow-up in this case so the slave owner can be held accountable for his cruelty.

Southeast Asia

Continue to pray for breakthrough as IJM’s teams in Bangkok and Cambodia work to bring urgent rescue to migrant workers trapped in slavery in the Thai fishing industry. As we work with our partners, pray that God would bring cases of trafficking to light. Pray that we are able to support Thai law enforcement effectively, so together we can find and rescue workers who are victims of trafficking — even as they’re moving between ports and fishing boats — and bring their traffickers to justice.

The podcast features conversations with leaders tackling some of the world’s biggest humanitarian issues, and people taking extraordinary steps to seek justice in their day-to-day lives. Pray that the podcast would continue to rally people across the globe to step into the fight against slavery and injustice in tangible ways.

“I get my knowledge from afar; I will ascribe justice to my maker.”

— Job 36:3

Africa

In Uganda, our teams continue to conduct research into violence that targets women and children, to determine the best design of a program to provide more effective legal protection. As we expand our focus beyond land theft, the team in Kampala has taken on several cases of sexual violence, working with partners to bring the cases to court and to provide for the needs of survivors. Join us in praising God that the survivors in these cases are thriving, and in praying for continued movement toward the resolution of their cases.

Latin America

Praise God for a 20-year sentence in the Dominican Republic! Our team helped secure this conviction against a German national guilty of trafficking, physical and psychological abuse, and sexual exploitation of two Haitian sisters. Give thanks to the Lord for the Dominican judge who sentenced him to prison and mandated he pay a fine to support the victims’ restoration process. The legal battle was long and challenging — it wasn’t until a year and a half after his arrest that the German national was sentenced. Read the full story.

South Asia

Praise God for a successful rescue operation led by a grassroots NGO and a proactive team of government officials — both trained by IJM. In this case, five boys had been forced to graze hundreds of goats across a huge tract of rural land. They ate only one small meal a day and slept on grass mats outside. On Monday, the IJM-trained rescue team successfully tracked the boys, interviewed them and brought them to safety, where they got food, medical care and rest. Police also arrested the alleged slave owner. Praise God for freedom in this case, and pray for these boys as they recover. Learn more about this case.

Southeast Asia

This week, through two back-to-back operations, four boys were rescued from cybersex trafficking in Metro Manila. Praise God for bringing these boys out of exploitation and into safety! As they begin to receive aftercare services, pray for their healing and restoration. Also pray for wisdom for the social workers determining the best options for their long-term care.

Please pray for the four Liberate Local events unfolding over the next weeks, beginning with Houston on April 26 and followed by Washington, DCon April 28 and SoCal and the Bay Area in early May. These events will be powerful nights packed with music, story and prayer to help free thousands from slavery. Please pray for smooth travel for IJM staff and the survivor who will be joining the events, and that God would use the events to rally others to the fight.

IJM Prayer Request

“He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.”

— Isaiah 53:3

Africa

Praise God for the rescue of two boys in Ghana after a family member learned about trafficking in a church service and reported that she believed the children had been trafficked. The brothers are 9 and 11 years old. They are both safe now, and one of the children said, “I am happy to be off the lake and wish to live with my mother and attend school.” Pray for their continued healing and for God to continue working through the church to spread awareness and encourage rescue.

Latin America

Praise God for an effective two-day training lead by IJM El Salvador to equip 32 local professionals to better support women and children with trauma-informed care practices. Last week, IJM trained local psychologists, social workers and other staff of a local partner organization who currently work with women and children across the country. Praise God for these local professionals who are now better equipped to protect, care for and support the most vulnerable in their communities. Ask for God’s favor over these new trainees as they return to their communities and train others to do the same. With this training program, IJM aims to reach over 2,000 professionals who will be able to provide better protection and care to approximately 60,000 children!

South Asia

Praise God for a successful rescue operation by a trained IJM partner that brought freedom to 28 people trapped in a brick kiln last weekend. IJM works with these like-minded grassroots organizations to expand rescue and restoration into new communities, and we are so thrilled to see their progress. The families in this case (including nine children) had been forced to work at the kiln for the last five years under exhausting conditions and impossible false debts. Praise God they are now allowed to enjoy life in freedom, and keep praying for the safety and success of our anti-slavery partners!

Southeast Asia

As a specialized law enforcement training wraps in the Philippines this week, pray that the officers would be able to quickly apply what they’ve learned to locate victims of cybersex trafficking who are in urgent need of rescue and arrest the abusers.

Please lift up the local prayer gatherings happening in communities across the U.S. this month, specifically Omaha, Lincoln, New York City, Dallas and Seattle this week. Join us in praising God for the volunteers who are leading these gatherings, and please pray that the events would rally more and more people to step into the fight against slavery through prayer.
